Who we are:

Finding inspiration, working rationally

Metropolitan Workshop is a practice of architects, urban planners and designers, founded in 2005 and based in Clerkenwell, London, with wide international experience of complex public and private sector projects.

Our design is rooted in the meaning and story of place and is driven by context and the client’s brief. We work with clients to find inspired solutions.

Projects range from large-scale new town centres, transport hubs, major retail, office, leisure and residential schemes, regeneration of inner city estates, university campuses and buildings, and tourist attractions. These include substantial projects in the UK, Ireland, Jordan, Sudan, Jersey and Norway.

How we work:

We demonstrate the value of our design decisions in everything we do. This helps clients select ideas and contribute to the process of designing places and buildings and itleads to clear decision-making and outcomes. This helps generate the integrity of our masterplanning, architecture and interior work.

Our design comes from a close engagement with the client and the brief, which we often help develop. It also comes from a detailed understanding of the physical, cultural and economic context – the nature of place. We create an open and iterative process using tested means of engaging clients – models, analysis drawings, sketches, workshops, optioneering – that is enjoyable, stimulating, and adds value. Working in this way produces solutions that exceed expectations. It works for us too.

We are keenly aware of the broader implications of high-level design issues which affect environmental, cultural and economic outcomes, both in masterplanning and architectural terms.

Successful masterplans drive economic dynamism which communities rely on for survival. We work with development economists to envision economic outcomes for major developments in terms of their impact on local economies.

The flexibility to accommodate change and deliver a new commercial reality over a long period needs to be hard-wired into design to provide the optionality communities need.

We maximise passive environmental solutions in masterplans and buildings because these deliver the most sustainable results in terms of reducing energy use and maintenance costs. They are also usually the least expensive and most simple solutions.
