Arundel Great Court occupies a city block at the heart of the London’s Embankment, prominent from both the riverfront and the Strand. It is surrounded by a number of historic listed buildings. Land Securities’ proposals for the redevelopment of this key site included the development of a major new office building.
The proposed Strand elevation is composed of friezes of stone fins of varying heights, providing shading and making a visual link with materials found in this context. The dimensions of these components are derived from the columns in the facades of neighbouring buildings. This ‘taxonomy’ of columns restores the vertical aesthetic and proportion to the site, characteristic of the existing buildings in the area. The proposed building acts to record and reflect its own context like a mirror.
