Port functions in Cork’s docklands had been moving downstream leaving behind a post industrial landscape equivalent in size to that of the historic city.
The 2008 South Docks Local Area Plan was drawn up to create a new city district with homes, offices, community buildings, open spaces and public transport corridors.
Metropolitan Workshop was commissioned with Mitchell + Associates to explore urban design ideas that acknowledged the economic changes since 2009.
The public realm will be imbued with the unique character of Cork and will set the scene for numerous development initiatives that will emerge incrementally.
