Poplar HARCA selected Metropolitan Workshop to work on several sites in London’s East End, one of which is a run-down low-rise residential block on Knapp Road. The brief was to replace bedsits with 35 mixed-tenure homes ranging from one to four bedroom apartments.
The scheme will improve the area by increasing the building’s street frontage, placing front doors and balconies so they overlook the street and widening the pavement to improve safety. The building will meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 and Lifetime Homes Standards.
A brick-clad,patterned façade will reflect the surrounding homes and school opposite. Inspiration for the patterning comes from the historic links of the area to the 18th century Bow Porcelain Factory, one of the first places to produce porcelain in England.
