Poplar HARCA and Countryside Properties commissioned Metropolitan Workshop to design the last phase of the Leopold estate renewal programme of 367 dwellings with two new streets and large, communal open spaces.
The high density proposal includes affordable homes in four and five-storey tenure-neutral wings around two new landscaped courtyards. The nine-storey, for-sale apartments will have panoramic views over London to the east and west, and generate extra value to cross-subsidise affordable homes.
The layout facilitates a desire line through the site that will connect nearby residents to community facilities and transport links via a new pedestrianised and landscaped diagonal route – Leopold Walk.
New homes will be constructed from a variety of bricks for durability and the upper floors are sculpted to create generous balconied belvederes to capture views to the south.
