Planning consent was granted by Hertsmere Borough Council for this sophisticated modern house in woods in the Metropolitan Green Belt around Radlett. Previously applications by others had been refused but the planning committee unanimously supported our contemporary design.
The design comprises three elements disposed to permit views through the site and minimising the bulk of the five bedroom house. The remains of a 19th century brick kiln in woods behind was the inspiration for the kiln-shaped drawing room and master bedroom element, and for the use of large format roman bricks.
Family living spaces flow through the ground floor and have prospects over courtyard areas. The first floor bedrooms are in separate wings which share a roof terrace with views over fields and woods. The subterranean suite has a gym, sauna and cinema and an energy centre which uses a ground source heat pump to help achieve Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5.
