Urbanism > Swords Town Centre, Fingal County Council, Ireland

Fingal County Council appointed Metropolitan Workshop to advise its team of planners and engineers and the Rail Procurement Agency on the production of a strategic vision and town centre masterplan. At the heart of this plan lies the Metro Quarter, a new public space and multi-modal transport interchange within a mixed use development 200,000m2.

Metro North is the new transport connection from Dublin City to Airport and it will terminate in Swords. The town is expected to grow from 40,000 to 100,000 within the next decade as a result. The principle challenge was the integration of road, rail and pedestrian movements into a successful and convivial urban environment set within an emerging “green” city.

The arrival of Metro North will mean significant economic growth and town expansion.  This comes with a range of challenges and opportunities. Our masterplan sought to address concerns such as housing, community, educational, health and recreational needs, employment activities, high quality open spaces and landscape, as well as connectivity and accessibility to all the above for new and existing communities.
