In 2012 Metropolitan Workshop (with O’Mahoney Pike Architects) was selected to re-consider proposals for a mixed use development containing 375 dwellings on a prominent waterfront site in Poole, which failed to gain planning permission.
Every aspect of the project’s design was reviewed and a new design solution was put forward that won the support of residents and the local authority. A significant reduction in height across the scheme was achieved by careful and efficient re-planning of the residental accommodation in this historic setting.
The roofscape and incremental character of Old Poole are key townscape characteristics which are celebrated in the revised scheme. We have drawn on historic architectural references and re-interpreted them in a contemporary idiom. The roofscape includes pyramidal roof forms with chimney elements at their apex that echo those of the Poole Breweries. These vertical elements will perform a varity of environmental functions such as passive ventilation and/or daylighting.
