Metropolitan Workshop was invited by OMS Architects to collaborate in an invited competition for the design of one of Ireland’s most prestigious projects. Pembroke Road is probably one of the most recognizable addresses in Dublin and a dominant artery to the city centre from the south side of Dublin. The proposal evolved with our appreciation and understanding of the brief, the specific characteristics of the site and its location. The initial response was to identify the key requirements of the brief: generous sized, high quality apartments; a clear definition between public, semi-private and private space; retention of street proportion; and recognition of the importance of light, landscape and permeability. The hierarchy and characteristics of street junctions and site specifics leads to a broad allocation of uses and scales. Lansdowne Road with its mature tree lined frontage opposite the fine, dignified period houses, suggests the reinforcement of the residential street with the building mass stepping back and up.
