Metropolitan Workshop was commissioned by Dublin City Council to prepare the urban design proposals for the Liberties Local Area Plan covering 135 hectares of the inner city embracing over 700,000sqm of potential new development.
The area is south west of the ancient city walls and the Guinness Brewery was the major employer. It remains one of the largest land-holders.
The plan celebrates the diverse character of the area and improves permeability to promote districts for residential intensification and new investment.
Our plans locate new public open spaces and civic facilities to attract new residents. Densities were modelled – physically and economically – to test viability so the scheme can be self-funded in increments. This was essential in an era of declining property values and public funding.
The plans were approved in 2009.
