Roding Lane North
Woodford, Essex
The site has been used as an unsightly car yard ever since it was designated as Green Belt after World War II. The London Borough of Redbridge has sought a solution to this inappropriate use for many years. Metropolitan Workshop was commissioned by the new landowner to transform the prominent site into an elegant, desirable new hamlet.
Proposing development in London’s Green Belt is a lengthy, demanding and risky process but the practice demonstrated ‘Very Special Circumstances’ and provided the outstanding design required for consent to be granted.
Planning approval was granted in 2012 and the planning gain is a new accessible meadow land overlooked by the 28 homes, five of which are affordable. All homes are designed to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.
