All Saints
Newby Place, Poplar
The Diocese of London appointed us to provide a sympathetic yet contemporary design response to provide five new homes on the site as a means of paying for the maintenance of a new landscaped setting for this beautiful Grade 2 listed Rectory. Our proposals create an L-shaped cloistered form, arranged to mitigate its impact when viewed from the public realm, to frame a new garden and to restore the original formal landscaped setting of the Rectory. The ‘loggia’ is clad in light glazed terracotta to match the stone banding on the Rectory, and functions as a device to reduce the perceived scale of the building.
"The loggia proportions are derived from features of the Grade II* listed All Saints Church, forming rhythms of alternating bay windows and generous entrance porches."
The glazed terracotta of the Loggia matches the tone of the stone banding of the Rectory.
The communal garden reinstates the formal landscaped setting of the listed Rectory.
